Troubleshooting guide

Camera not working in the browser

Check browser and operating-system permissions, select the intended camera, and preview it locally without uploading or recording the image.

Run camera test

Common symptoms

  • Camera permission prompt never appears
  • Preview is black or frozen
  • The camera is available in one app but busy in another

Possible causes

  • Browser or operating system permission blocked
  • Another app or tab is using the camera
  • Wrong camera selected or privacy shutter closed
  • Driver, cable, or hardware problem

How to diagnose it

  1. Run the DeviceTriage Camera Test
  2. Check the browser address-bar permission control
  3. Close video-call and camera applications
  4. Try the operating system camera app to isolate browser issues

Solutions to try

  1. Grant temporary access to the correct site
  2. Close competing apps and retry
  3. Open the physical shutter and reconnect external cameras
  4. Select the correct camera in the target app
  5. Update the browser and camera driver if the OS camera app works

The first 10-minute diagnosis

  1. Open the physical privacy shutter and confirm the correct camera is selected.
  2. Close meeting, streaming, and camera apps that may already own the device.
  3. Run the local camera preview and grant access only after the DeviceTriage prompt.
  4. Compare the operating-system camera app to locate browser-only versus device-wide failure.

Platform-specific checks

Windows

Review Camera privacy access, desktop-app access, the selected device, and Device Manager. Some laptops also have a hardware key or vendor privacy mode.

macOS and iOS

Review Camera permission in Privacy & Security. On iPhone/iPad, embedded browsers and app-level permissions may differ from Safari.

Android and external cameras

Check app permission and system camera privacy. For USB cameras, compare another port, cable, powered hub, and the system camera app.

What not to do first

  • Do not interpret permission denial as camera failure.
  • Do not download unknown webcam driver packs before identifying the camera and checking the manufacturer source.
  • Do not repeatedly reconnect a camera during firmware update or active recording.

When to move beyond a browser test

  • Use manufacturer diagnostics if the camera fails in the operating-system app after permission, shutter, cable, and port checks.
  • Treat physical damage, liquid exposure, loose internal cables, or repeated disconnects as repair issues rather than browser problems.

Frequently asked questions

Does the camera test upload video?

No. The preview remains inside the page and the media stream is stopped when you finish or leave.

Can a black preview prove the camera is broken?

No. Permissions, privacy shutters, another app, lighting, or driver problems can produce a black preview.
