Troubleshooting guide

Mouse clicks or movement not working

Separate a browser or application mapping problem from wireless, sensor, button, cable, port, and operating-system causes.

Run mouse and pointer test

Common symptoms

  • The pointer skips, freezes, or does not move
  • One button or the wheel works inconsistently
  • The mouse works in one application but not another

Possible causes

  • Application focus, shortcut, overlay, or button remapping
  • Dirty sensor, reflective surface, weak battery, or wireless interference
  • Worn switch, damaged cable, receiver, adapter, or USB port
  • Operating-system accessibility, driver, or power-saving behavior

How to diagnose it

  1. Run the DeviceTriage Mouse Test and check movement, every button, and the wheel separately
  2. Compare a plain operating-system app and a second current browser
  3. Try a clean matte surface, reconnect the receiver, and check battery state
  4. Compare another port or mouse without changing several variables at once

Solutions to try

  1. Restore application button mappings and close overlays that capture input
  2. Use a suitable surface and the maker's safe cleaning method
  3. Recharge or replace the battery and reduce receiver interference
  4. Update official system or manufacturer drivers when the issue follows the device
  5. Replace or service hardware only after the symptom follows the mouse across devices

The first 10-minute diagnosis

  1. Test movement, primary, secondary, middle, and wheel events separately in the Mouse Test.
  2. Compare a simple operating-system app so you know whether the symptom is browser-only.
  3. Use a clean matte surface and check battery, cable, receiver, adapter, and port.
  4. Change one variable at a time and record which device, port, or app the fault follows.

Platform-specific checks

Windows

Review mouse button assignments, pointer enhancement, USB power saving, Bluetooth state, and manufacturer software.

macOS

Compare tracking, secondary click, accessibility controls, Bluetooth, and any third-party remapping utility.

Mobile and tablets

External mouse support and button mappings vary. Separate touch, stylus, trackpad, and mouse pointer behavior.

What not to do first

  • Do not install unknown driver-updater bundles.
  • Do not spray cleaner into switches or openings.
  • Do not conclude that a mouse is broken from one browser-reserved shortcut.

When to move beyond a browser test

  • Seek service when the same physical button or movement fault follows the mouse across devices.
  • Investigate the operating system when several pointing devices fail on the same device.

Frequently asked questions

Can a browser measure exact mouse polling rate?

Not reliably. Browser scheduling, event coalescing, display refresh, and power state affect delivery, so this is a functional event test rather than a calibrated rate test.

Why does a side button work outside the browser but not here?

The operating system, browser navigation, an extension, or application mapping may intercept it before the page receives an event.
