Play a short tone through each channel

Use a comfortable system volume. These generated tones verify browser audio output and stereo direction by listening; DeviceTriage cannot automatically hear your speakers.

What this test proves—and what it cannot

The speaker test plays short controlled tones through the browser so you can confirm left, right, and combined output. It helps locate channel routing, mute, balance, output-selection, cable, and speaker problems without uploading media or claiming calibrated audio quality.

Signals measured

  • Whether browser audio can start after a user action
  • User-observed left, right, and centered stereo routing
  • Audible mute, severe imbalance, distortion, interruption, or wrong output
  • The current browser and system output path as a whole

How the test works

  1. Audio starts only from a deliberate button press to respect autoplay policy.
  2. Web Audio creates brief test tones and pans them to the selected channel.
  3. The tones are generated locally; no personal audio file is read or sent.
  4. The listener confirms the result because browsers cannot hear the speaker output.

Interpreting the results

Channels sound correctThe current browser-to-output route preserved the expected stereo positions. If one app fails, inspect its output device and channel settings.
One side is silentBalance, mono mode, cable, port, speaker, or channel routing may be involved.Check balance/mono, reseat or swap channels, and compare headphones.

Measurement limits

  • A browser cannot measure acoustic frequency response, loudness calibration, latency, or distortion precisely without a calibrated microphone and environment.
  • Bluetooth, spatial-audio, mono, accessibility, and operating-system processing can alter channel output.
  • Keep volume moderate; loud test tones are unnecessary and unsafe.

Missing or privacy-reduced detail is not scored as a fault by itself.

Questions about this test

Why do left and right both play from both speakers?

Mono audio, spatial processing, a mixer setting, a cable adapter, or the physical speaker design can combine channels. Compare headphones and system accessibility settings.

Can this test certify speaker quality?

No. It verifies an audible route and channel placement. Quality measurements need calibrated equipment, known source levels, and a controlled environment.
