Troubleshooting guide

WebGL is not supported or unavailable

Understand why WebGL may be missing and verify whether the browser can complete a controlled graphics render.

Run GPU & WebGL test

Common symptoms

  • 3D viewers show a blank or fallback screen
  • A website reports WebGL disabled
  • Browser graphics tests cannot create a WebGL context

Possible causes

  • Hardware acceleration disabled
  • Graphics driver or operating system limitation
  • Browser policy, remote session, or virtual environment restriction
  • Older or restricted in-app browser

How to diagnose it

  1. Open DeviceTriage in a full mainstream browser rather than an in-app view
  2. Run GPU, WebGL & WebGPU Test
  3. Check the browser graphics status page for disabled features
  4. Compare after updating the browser and graphics driver

Solutions to try

  1. Enable browser hardware acceleration and restart
  2. Update the browser, operating system, and graphics driver
  3. Avoid remote or virtual sessions for the comparison test
  4. Try a second current browser to isolate policy or profile issues
  5. Use software fallback only when the target app provides one

Frequently asked questions

Does WebGL failure prove the GPU is broken?

No. Browser settings, drivers, policies, virtual machines, and embedded browsers can block WebGL even when the physical GPU works.

Is WebGPU required if WebGL works?

No. WebGPU is newer and many sites do not require it. Missing WebGPU alone is not currently a general device fault.
